The short video below gives a glimpse into the creative process and completion of a recent original art work for sale, and includes images from a “sparrow making party” with my son and two friends!
“Spiro the Sparrow” is a little bird character that I intend to use in my next children’s book and am gradually working on the accompanying artwork. In the story, Spiro needs to be in seven different flight poses for certain parts and it was fun creating these additional poses along with friends.
I showed them my first prototype of “Spiro the Sparrow” which I had created myself (see video below), and then provided materials and guidance for us to create “similar” collaged sparrows. While they are not all quite identical and meticulous as my prototype, I believe this will add to the mystery and whimsy of the children’s book art.
After scanning each sparrow separately, for future use in the book, I then took a large canvas from Goodwill that had similar rust, brown and gold tones (it was some type of blase abstract art which I bought awhile back simply to repurpose the very large canvas…) and I put some sky tones and whimsical tree branches over most parts of it (while allowing some of the original tones to peek through), and then adhered the seven sparrows in flight using a glue-and-water collage technique.
Lastly, I added some music notes and accents to make the birds “pop,” visually.
I like to create art that has derivative works and purposes. This canvas with all seven will also be used somewhere in the children’s book, as well as being available for purchase (both the original and canvas prints, or matted archival paper prints and cards).
If you are interested in purchasing this work the cost is $600 plus shipping. The canvas size is 36 x 46, and estimated shipping might be between $100-$200, depending on destination, due to its size. If you are local, you would be able for pickup or I could meet someone partway between my studio and your location, if possible!
